Cone + Stovetop Compound Incense Workshop-North Saanich March 29th
Date: Sunday March 29th
Location: Anneth Farm 9420 West Saanich Rd, West Saanich
Time: 12pm-4pm
Join herbalist and medicinal herb farmer Marae in a hands-on workshop crafting hand-rolled incense cones and stovetop-blended compound incense slabs. We will making blends with locally grown and farm-direct herbs, berries, roots, juices, fruit, floral waters, herb resins and honey (vegan alternatives available) Participants will learn blending and shaping methods and take their custom cones and slabs home to cure.
We will explore both the physiological and energetic benefits of plant smoke, discussing its use across various cultural and historical contexts. The workshop will create space for conversations around the respectful use of plant smoke, acknowledging the issues of appropriation of First Nations indigenous sacred plants and smudging practices. We will highlight the importance of culturally relevant, sustainable and respectful alternatives for folks of mixed ancestries. Marae will provide tips on at-home growing and sourcing ingredients. She will also share some uses of specific plants rooted in her mixed Slavic and Scandinavian ancestral folk traditions.
If you’d like to work with a specific culturally significant-to you plant, you are welcome to bring it along to incorporate in your blend!
Please bring:
-Snacks and water.
-A cup for tea
-Journal for note taking
-If you have a mortar and pestle, or any herbs you would like to incorporate please bring them with.
FARM NOTES: We would like participants to know Anneth Farm is a private residence, horse stable, operating farm and hide tannery. Other folks will be running their work at the farm during the workshop so we request that folks stay in the front room where we will be running the workshop. Please don’t roam around the farm, and be respectful of parking out of the way of the main stables driveway where horse-share members frequent throughout the day. We encourage car-pooling to reduce traffic at the farm! There is a bus stop a few metres down the road for bus commuters. I will forward an email with more property logistics before the course date.
Registration is sliding scale $35-65 via e-transfer to [email protected]
