Plant Dyed Silk Altarcloths Workshop: Sat July 26th
Join herbalist and regenerative medicinal herb and flower farmer, Marae of Viriditas Apothecary in a hands-on outdoor workshop making hand dyed silk altar cloths. We will be working with herbs and flowers grown in the dye garden. Participants will have the choice to try different methods, including an immersive dye bath, or steam bundle dying. Marae will cover various mordants and natural materials to alter dye pigmentation. Participants will each get their own silk altarcloth to take home after the workshop!
Participants are welcome to bring ancestral plants and pigmented plants significant to them or a loved one. We will be creating altar cloths to adorn our personal spaces, to honour ancestors, and those no longer with us.
We will be beginning the session with a meditation to bring us into our intergenerational and cellular familiarity with plants and the natural world. Marae will be introducing some specific herbs she works with to tend to the grief inherent in our humanness. We will explore tools and exercises to connect with plants as teachers and guides through the challenging experiences of grief and loss. We will also be exploring plant-human relationship as a mantle for healing and connectivity to our belonging–returning to kinship and stewardship with our environment, ecologies and wider sense of interconnectivity.
Workshop fee: $40-60 sliding scale. Workshop fee includes silk altar cloth to bring home, dye materials, tea and a small plant dying zine.
